Kim Shepard - VA Dept. for Aging and Rehabilitative Services

JANE:
Hello I'm Jane Applegate with Cox business television. I'm here with Kim Shepherd she's human services manager with the Virginia Department for aging and rehabilitative services. It's a new agency created recently by Virginia Gov. McDonald to work with community groups and employers who are serving Virginians who are aging and those with disabilities. Virginia actually has about a million citizens who are over 65 and many of them want to keep working. So Kim thanks so much for stopping by and tell us about the merger and what was the purpose.

KIM:
Gov. McDonnell effective July 1st merged our two agencies together as you stated DARS which is the department for aging and rehabilitive services and our mission statement is to serve the older our older Virginians and persons with disabilities to obtain employment and independence and full inclusion into the community and by doing so we're preparing the Commonwealth for our aging population.

JANE:
So many people are working longer and have so many skills to offer. So how can a small business owner benefit from what you're doing with your constituants?

KIM:
Right well we have so many services that could benefit small businesses and larger business but in particular small businesses. We have I'd say the number one service that we can provide is the pre-screened qualified applicants to meet their job needs. We've already gone through and prepared them and we have a list of individuals that are ready to work and willing and will be absolutely the best employees that you'll ever ever have. We can offer a work opportunity tax credit. We can also provide on-the-job training where we provide a qualified individual and then for a duration of time can pay half their salary while they're learning the job. So you can see that it would be a cost savings for a small business as that we are paying for the training to take place and we're also offering a tax credit. We provide disability etiquette disability awareness training. We can come into the to the office and see if it's assessable persons with disabilities. So those are some of the the services that we can provide to the employer.

JANE:
And for a business owner watching this, whose all of a sudden perked up when they heard tax credit, skilled worker, how do they get in touch with you or just what's the process for getting more information?

KIM:
Right, well every region and has an office on but we do have an 800 number that you could call and I can provide that number 1-800-552-5019 and the receptionist there can connect you with the appropriate area in which you know you are living working or have your small business.

JANE:
So it looks like you're providing wonderful resources and every business owner in Virginia should know about the merger and what you're doing.

KIM:
Absolutely I think so.

JANE:
Thank you so much for stopping by I really appreciate it.

KIM:
Thank you for having me.
